Description

The Orange Box is an in-house magnetotelluric data logger built by the University of Adelaide and Flinders University. It records eight channels at 24-bit resolution on a Symmetric Research PAR24B acquisition board controlled by a Persistor single-board computer, sampling at 10 Hz with data stored to a 2 GB SD card. Three-component magnetic fields are measured with an external Bartington Mag03 fluxgate magnetometer (70000 nT full scale) and two horizontal electric-field channels; electric-field input range is +/-2.5 V on the 2002 generation and +/-10 V on the 2007-2008 generation. The instrument has no GPS receiver; timing is by real-time clock with manually recorded clock offsets. The high-frequency magnetometer programme behind these instruments dates from 1999 at Flinders University (the firmware banner in every recording reads "1999 - 2010"); the present fleet's Persistor controllers were purchased in 2002 (CF1 generation) and 2007-2008 (CF2 generation).
