Description

The 2022 Western Gawler Broadband Magnetotelluric Survey was a temporary field campaign conducted across the western Gawler Craton within the Fowler Domain, South Australia, to investigate the electrical resistivity structure of the crust and upper mantle and to improve understanding of the regional geological controls on magmatic nickel-copper-platinum group element (Ni-Cu-PGE) mineralisation. Broadband magnetotelluric measurements were acquired to support three-dimensional imaging of lithospheric architecture from the near surface to the Moho and integration with complementary geological and geophysical datasets.

The survey was undertaken during March and April 2022 and comprised 84 broadband magnetotelluric stations deployed along three approximately east-west traverses crossing the dominant geological strike, with nominal station spacing of approximately 2 km. Short-period passive seismic nodal instruments were deployed concurrently and co-located with the magnetotelluric stations to support integrated lithospheric imaging and geophysical interpretation.

Data were acquired using Adelaide University LEMI-423 broadband magnetotelluric systems accessed through the AuScope - ANSIR Research Facilities for Earth Sounding. Concurrent passive seismic measurements were acquired using SmartSolo IGU-16HR 3C nodal seismic instrumentation hosted by the Australian National University and accessed through the AuScope - ANSIR Research Facilities for Earth Sounding.
